Skills & training

At Blue Sky we are committed to the development and training of our employees and are proud to have achieved the Investors in People accreditation.

Our Employment Liaison Officer works with each team member to develop an individual training plan - the first step on the path to long term employment. To read more about the training we offer, please follow this link to training.

We aim to help employers to address skills and labour shortages, which can be particularly acute in the construction and grounds maintenance sectors.

The model we use was pioneered in HMP Bullingdon, working in partnership with Clancy Docwra Limited. Targeted training takes place inside prison to standards defined by the employer. Successful graduates are offered a job with Blue Sky. On satisfactory completion of their contract with us, Clancy Docwra guarantees permanent jobs to suitable employees.

To enable others to meet skills shortages in different sectors, similar models are being rolled out in west London and Bristol with our partners Veolia Environmental Services (UK) plc and HMP Wormwood Scrubs.

In addition, each employee who completes their contract with us can expect an allowance to assist them in meeting identified skills gaps. This is most commonly used for training to drive, a significant barrier to employment. We would like to acknowledge the support of the Mercers’ Company in making this happen.
England and Wales release 90,000 prisoners each year; 60% of prisoners re-offend within 2 years.            Re-offending costs England and Wales £12 billion each year.            Employment reduces re-offending by 33-50% but 75% of ex-offenders have no job on release.
